Is there a way to erase the last user name from the login
box using group policies? I have a lab that I want to
have no username in the box after they logoff.

Yup. Edit your Group Policy and go to:

Computer configuration -- Windows Settings -- Security Settings -- Local
Policies -- Security Options -- Interactive logon: Don't display last
user name

The exact wording might be different if you are on a Windows 2000 domain
(the above is taken from WS2K3).
