remove spelling language?

Hi all

Does anyone know how to remove a language so its not used by the spelling
checker?

For example in the UK we type 'organisation' but if i also type
'organization' Word doesnt recognise the 2nd one as being wrong, even though
it is for us english.

I found in the Tools, Language, Set Language option that English US has the
ABC tick next to it so that the spelling checker uses it, but i want to
remove this option, so its only spell checked against the UK dictionary, how
can i do this?

Ive searched long and hard on the net and help files but now luck. hope you
can help :)

After you've removed any undesired keyboard layouts or languages,
turned off the auto-detection of languages (as described at
http://homepage.swissonline.ch/cindymeister/LangFmt.htm), try the
three step procedure described in the end of the article. Or, as a
quicker (but less reliable) method, simply select the entire document
and specify the desired language in Tools>Language>Set Language.

ok i had a bash at that but still with no luck. I created a new document
and then typed the following in :-

Organisation

Organization

then highlighted it all and went to the Set Language option to UK English
but it still fails to red underline the american spelling, and running the
spell checker says no mistakes. :(

I think your problem here is your assumption that "organization" is the
"American" spelling. In reality, I believe you'll find that it's acceptable
UK spelling as well. If you want it to be marked as misspelled, add it to
your exclusion dictionary (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/ExcludeWordFromDic.htm).

Wrong test - "organization" is an allowable (and in some house styles,
preferred) alternative in UK English, though at one time the spell checker
did erroneously mark it as an error. Try color or traveled instead <g>.

If you want to stick with "organisation" you can add "organization" to your
Exclude dictionary. Step by step instruction in the Help - it's the second
hit for "Exclude dictionary" (how *do* they achieve these search
weightings??!) or the first one for "preferred spelling".

I tried it with color and traveled but it still dont find them as being
spelt incorrectly.

It seems that americanisms of words are always allowed in Word, you cant get
the spellchecker to only work in one laguage :(

If you place the insertion point in "color" or "traveled" and go to Tools |
Language | Set Language, what language is selected?

I tried it with both words, either with the cusor in the middle of the word
or the word highlighted but both times in the Language pop up box it has
English (U.K.) highlighted cause its the top, first option, and English
(U.S.) as the 2nd option (not selected mind) then theres the break line and
then the rest of the languages. Both of these top options have the ABC tick
before them.

The highlighted language (regardless of its position in the MRU list) is the
language currently in effect at the insertion point, so it would appear that
either English (UK) accepts these spellings or they have been added to the
custom dictionary.

I dont know how this could have happened.

Alas it would seem that its not possible to remove a language from being
spell checked then if word knows about it, would this be right to say?

Word uses (as available) the proofing tools appropriate for the language
applied to the text. That means that if you have a paragraph that contains
French words whose language has been set as French, the French spelling
checker will be applied to those words, while the rest will be checked with
the lexicon for whatever version of English you have applied. When results
are not as expected, the first thing to do is to make sure that the correct
language is applied (if you paste in text from another source and start
typing after it, the language at the insertion point may be different from
your default language).

If the language setting is as expected and the "misspelled" word is still
not marked as incorrect, then the only possible conclusion is that either
the lexicon in force considers it correct or that it has been added to the
custom dictionary. It's easy enough to check the latter (Tools | Options |
Spelling & Grammar | Custom Dictionaries: Modify...). If the word is in the
custom dictionary, it can be removed. If not, then the only recourse is to
add the "misspelling" to an exclusion dictionary.
