First - why are you attempting to *remove* Service Pack 2 [for Windows XP *I
assume*...]? That seems... strange.

Second - what/where are these 'procedures' from which you are supposedly
quoting?

Removing Service Pack 2 - unless it came integrated into your installation -
is as simple as going into Add or Remove Programs control panel and finding
the update and removing it.

If you are trying/paraphrasing:
How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 from your computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875350
.... under the section (last method) entitled: "Use Recovery Console"...
simply read the entire note:

"Note Your computer must be configured to start from the CD drive or the DVD
drive. For more information about how to configure your computer to start
from the CD drive or the DVD drive, see the documentation that came with
your computer or contact the computer manufacturer."

Which basically means you have to go into the System BIOS (nothing to do
with Windows - when you first turn on your computer - watch carefully for
"Press xxx to enter System Setup..." or something similar and press whatever
key/key combination it gives you.)

Presuming you mean SP 2 for Windows XP, why on earth would you want to
do this? Not only will you be severely decreasing the security of your
computer, you won't be able to obtain updates from Microsoft, including
critical security updates. In addition, much if not most of recent
software requires SP 2.

Removing Service Pack 2 - unless it came integrated into your installation -
is as simple as going into Add or Remove Programs control panel and finding
the update and removing it.

The directions provide 4 ways to remove Windows Service Pack 2. The first
option describes removing by accessing the Control Panel. After many years
of computer experience I discovered a first in my wife's computer...The
Control Panel option is missing.

Allow me to describe what occurred since yesterday.

My wife brought to my attention when she started her computer the following
message:

Persistence module has encountered a problem and needs to close

Below the message there are two options...report the problem and don't report

Obviously I chose report.

Attempts to enter the update page proved futile. The following message is
displayed:

Network policy settings prevent you from using this web site to get updates
for your computer Error no. 0X8DDD0003

I attempted to remove/reinstall SP 2. The first three attempts identified
in KB/875350 would not successfully remove SP 2.

Her computer has three major problems and a message during every startup:

System restore will not preceed 29 December
No access to udate page
No access to Control Panel
Persistence module has encountered a problem and needs to close.

If you have a better suggestion I would appreciate the answer.

"System restore will not preceed 29 December"

Don't know what that means - for help with System Restore (which was not
introduced with SP 2) start here: http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html

"No access to u[p]date page"

What 'update page' are you referring to? If you are referring to
Microsoft or Windows Update (both of which predate SP 2), ask in the
newsgroup for Windows Update.

"No access to Control Panel"

Exactly what happens when you try to open Control Panel?

"Persistence module has encountered a problem and needs to close."

What program is giving you this message?

Have you considered the possibility of a virus or other type of infection?

Do you have any clues as to what might have caused these problems?

Does Event Viewer provide any information?

It's not even a matter of a better suggestion. It is *highly* unlikely
that removing SP2 will have any effect on these problems.

Not having access to Control Panel is highly suggestive of your being
infected with malware. I recommend that you begin troubleshooting by
going to MVP Malke's malware removal site at

following the instructions there.

Restore control panel - see line 256 at :
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Another the registry by opening a run command and type in:
regedit click [OK] and on the Registry editor locate this Key:
[-]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer =
In the right pane/Window locate this "NoControlPanel" Edit if the Folder
Option is set to 1 set it to Zero.
[-]HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer =
In the right pane/Window locate this "NoControlPanel" Edit if the Folder
Option is set to 1 set it to Zero.
Let us know with the rest of the info is it XP H or Pro?.

Both previously set at Zero...

XP Home

Appreciate all the avenues suggested, but is there a way to uninstall XP
Service Pack 2 with out the means i.e. No Control Panel, etc?

Please note I have two other computers. Went in Add/Remove Programs. Could
not locate "Windows AP Service Pack 2." Seems if the bad computer had the
Control Panel, I would not accomplish much without said title. They both
have SP 2.

Rebooted and restored Control Panel. However when open Add or Remove

I cannot see how the removal of the SP2 will help, you need to see what is
screwing up on this machine, this looks kind of Viral infection took complete
control on your machine and disallowing you from accessing even the basic
stuff!.

Try this tool, but please read first and try other options before heading to
the removal of SP2 like running the Hijack this and send the log to one of
many forums for analysis.
http://www.ccleaner.com
Please read the help file to understand how to use this tool.

Right click the start Button and select properties, on the Taskbar and start
menu properties click on Customize button and then click on advanced tab,
scroll down and make sure the Control panel display is set as Display as link
not To Not display display this Item.

Did you tried in Safe Mode?.

Download the Hijackthis and send the report to one of many
forums for analysis and troubleshooting:
http://www.merijn.org/index.php
When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis) is
the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. Post
your log to http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7, or other appropriate
forums for expert analysis, not here.

Did the machines *come with* SP2 installed already or did you have to update
them later to SP2?

SP2 was released in 2004. If you got the computer after September 2004,
there is a distinct possibility you will *not* be uninstalling SP2 anyway.
It likely came installed (integrated) into the OS.

Also - from reading your symptoms - it's not going to help.

Please note that you could - if you think uninstalling/installing SP2 would
help - just install SP2 again without uninstalling. It will replace any
corrupt/changed files and be pretty much like uninstalling/installing it
anew (SP2 that is.)

If this:
c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

Doesn't exist - the chances of uninstalling it are slim at best. Better to
install SP2 anew and see if that helps and then - you will have what you
need in Add or Remove Programs control panel.
