Remove Outlook Express from W98SE

Quite awhile ago, a small utility was mentioned to do this.

I used it, it worked fine.

I have a fresh install of W98SE and again need to remove the default OE.

Can't find that utility, IIRC, it was Art that suggested it.

Anyone recall this one?

Thanks, that's using Control Panel, I tried that on an ME computer, just
does not work. I will try it in W98SE, see results.

What I vaguely remember was a small executable that really removed OE.

Are you talking about this?

It doesn't remove OE. However, when I was running ME, I was able to
easily remove OE via the Add/Remove Programs module. Might have had to
click on the Windows Modules tab or whatever it was called. If you've
upgraded OE to a newer version, you'll need to uninstall the newer
version first.

Instructions are here about how to remove OE otherwise:

Oh yeah, to all the trolls: OE is freeware for users of Windows.

I don't reply to trolls like Andy Mabbett, Doc (who uses sock puppets)
or Roger Johansson, for instance. No adware, cdware, commercial
software, crippleware, demoware, nagware, PROmotionware, shareware,
spyware, time-limited software, trialware, viruses or warez for me, please.

I'm a bit confused; OE is entirely optional in Windose, isn't it?

You can choose not to have it on install, or remove it via control
panel>windows setup.

I think address book has to go too. I know, because I never install OE,
that address book is also barred.

Unless it was a Freudian slip for IE, in which case I think the best thing
is to keep it, only for use like going to MS. I think it's worth it,
because their d/l site is getting a lot better

Mike..... keep in mind that if your remove IE, you won't be able to
update Windows!

That's interesting; I thought it worked the other way around (that
is, to use OE you have to install the address book, but that the
address book can be used without OE installed).

(I'm not sure, though, since I use neither.)

That's what the above was meant to say - sorry if it wasn't clear, though
there are other ways of updating

I can't recomember - I know refusing one blocks the other, been there
loadsa times, never took much notice of the order of service!

It mentions IE, don't see about OE. The one I used to have just had the one function,
uninstall OE. In my Add/Remove, OE does not show, but it's in the registry still.

I tried to respond the question you sent to Clay but the email addy
you gave was no good. Anyway, I never knew about any OE remover,
just IERadicator for IE.

Thanks, John, I will certainly use it on my ME computer, that is exactly what I'd
like to find for W98SE.

That uses Control Panel, see my reply above.

IE is so interwoven in windows, I keep it but never use it. I have my W98 patches
saved from the old days, but now run fine with no patches. Address book is unchecked
in Accessories, Task Scheduler is another I never use. Freeware is so much better
than a lot of the MS defaults.

Perhaps I was a bit too speedy before, mike.

How about

Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

"Windows Setup" Tab

Uncheck "Address Book" and "Outlook Express",

which are both top level on the menu; many other things lurk behind
"Accessories" or "Games" etc.

I don't expect they would remove all trace from the registry, but I would
probably try a registry search tool and delete the lot, as long as I
remebered how to get into Dos and scanreg/restore....
(Mmmmm, scanreg/restore) :)

mike

There's a freeware program called IE Iradicator, which, I believe, removes
the whole of the Internet Explorer package - including Outlook Express - if
you have trouble finding it I'll be happy to email the zipped file to you.

Thanks, mike. I tried that first, both now are not listed in Add/Remove, I'll live
with what's left as the computer has other issues. A new install can sure cause
problems on an old computer when all the old fixes are not present.
