Remove from Start-Up Menu....

W

William B. Lurie

Now that I see what-all is in my Run>>msconfig>>Start-Up
listing, I'd like to know how to remove from that list some
of the items that I won't mind waiting for the loading of,
on those occasions that I want those programs to run.
Thank you.

William,

These programs are loaded in the following part of the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

How to Modify the List of Programs that Run When You Start Windows XP:

If you don't want to edit the registry manually, your best option is to uncheck the items from the Startup listings and download the script from Kelly's site which clears the disabled items from the Startup lists.

See Tip 148 in MVP Kelly's site: Clear Disabled Items from Msconfig Startup
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

NOTE: The disabled startup items are moved here:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg]

Hi William,

Just a tip; No items are in "msconfig startup" on a clean install. That is
to say, if you unchecked all in the list, your PC will still run. You should
have your AV and firewall programs run at start but, everything else is
optional.

Thanks, JAX. I think I knew that, but I seem to recall that
unchecking items forces the system into a special kind of start-up
mode which requires more clicking to get out of it. I got a response
telling me how to delete from the Start-Up list by snooping and
deleting in the Registry, but that shouldn't be necessary. I mean,
XP is well-enough thought out so that Microsoft may have, and should
have, provided a way to remove one item (like my Scanner or Video
Camera) from the Start-Up menu without the hazards of fooling with Registry.

Hi again William,

I am not aware of any real problem related to un-checking items in msconfig.
The preferred way though, is to disable the programs "start at boot" from
within the program's options, if it is an available. I have un-checked all
programs that didn't have that option on my machine except AV, etc. and have
no problems.

The link below may be of help to you in identifying the programs in your
list.

The first time that you restart after making changes in MSCONFIG, you'll
get a popup informing you that settings have changed in MSCONFIG. Of course
they have, you just changed them. Check the box on that notification window
to *not* show the window again and click OK. The message should stay away
until you make other changes in MSCONFIG.
