Remove From Open With

Joe

I have another query from one of our Senior Group members that I can't
answer.

His question is, How can I remove an item from the 'open with' list. To
clarify he means that when he clicks on a file or folder and selects 'open
with' he wants to remove entries from that list.

Any suggestions please?

I believe this is based on the registered handlers for the file type (though
I won't swear to this).

To remove an open with entry, run regedit:

1. Navigate to the following key:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts

2. Locate the file extension for the type of file whose list you want to
edit. Click the + sign and click "OpenWithList."

3. In the right pane, you'll see a list of entries labeled a, b, c, etc.
in the "Data" column, the name of the program to which the entry
corresponds appears.

4. To delete a program from the list, click it (the letter under "Name,"
not the program name under "Data") and press the delete key.

Many thanks Rock, I have passed your information on to him.

Hi Joe,

You are still at it and glad to hear it. Hats off for your work and

Added info:

Check your settings here:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications
Select the associated sub-key, if 'NoOpenWith' is listed, delete it.

Also here:

This setting allows you to control whether the checkbox to save the "Open
With" program is available when an unknown file type is opened.

and

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\openas\command

Unfortunately not at all easy. There is a separate list for each
extension.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\FileExts\.xxx\OpenWithList
for each of the .xxx sub-keys corresponding to extensions of interest,
deleting programs as desired in the right pane (and removing the related
letter from the list in MRUList), and then the related one in the
OpenWithProgIds immediately adjacent.

And at that it will not catch everything - for example installing any
browser will make that available for many types

G'day Rock, a further question on this one if I may please.

I forwarded your response on to our member and I have a reply back that when
he went to where he was directed, he opened an .exe Extension/OpenWithList,
and all that is shown there is the Default Icon, REG_SZ and (value not set).

I am curious as to the .exe extension, is that a normal entry please?

Am not Rock, but......if you are speaking of the .exe in general here, it
should read:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe

Default - Reg_sz - exefile
Content Type - Reg_sz - application/x-msdownload

Plus a subkey - Persistant Handler - {098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}

If this is not the case, more info needed.

Thanks Kelly,

The information that I gave is what he sent to me in a screen shot, but
naturally I didn't post that here. One thing I did omit to mention is that
he is using windows 2000 where I thought he had XP, would that have any
relevance?

Another thought is does he have a corrupted registry?

Hi Joe,

With the commonality between XP and W2K, I wouldn't doubt any substantial
differences. However, beings I don't have W2K installed at the moment, I
can't verify nor confirm on this matter.

Sorry Joe, I don't know about W2k.
