Way back in the dim and distant past (last century actually) in the days of
Excel 5, I added custom items to the built in Tools menu. Some time later, I
added new Menus to the Menu bar and wished to remove the custom items from
the Tools menu. However, I found that while removal was easy, when I shut
down Excel and re-opened it, those custom items were back again.

The years have gone by and Excel versions have come and gone, updated to
Excel 97 and now to Office XP with all it's whistles and bells but yes,
you've guessed it, those pesky custom entries are still there in the Tools
menu.

Again, in Office XP I can remove them while Excel is open but after shutdown
and re-open, they are back, just as fresh as the day they were created.

Am I doomed to see these for the rest of my life?

Philip,

Go to Customize (View - Toolbars - Customize) (or right click any toolbar
and select Customize). Now open the Tools menu and drag the undesirable
stuff off of it. Close Customize.

Alternatively, since this is a stock menu, while in Customize, you can
select the Toolbars tab, and the Worksheet Menu Bar (not the check box -
click to select it (make it blue)). Then hit Reset. That sets it back to
its original out-of-the-box state.

I had tried both those methods before and yes the items go but as I said,
when I shut down Excel, next time I open it those items are back there on
the Tools menu. magic or what?

Excel 5.0 used the "Menu Editor" to build menus. This is no longer available
in versions newer than 5.0. You can't use the "delete" method or "reset" to
get rid of the custom menu items.

To get rid of the custom menu download Jim Rech's REMOVEMENUS.ZIP file from
Stephen Bullen's site. See instructions and d/l file from:
