Remove curly apostophes from autocorrect?

(Using Word 2003 on Windows XP)

I have the curly quotes option turned off. Yet autocorrect irritatingly adds
a curly apostrophe when I mistype a word. For example, if I type dosen't
(straight quote), Word autocorrects to doesn't (curly apostophe). That's the
case for every contraction in my autocorrect list.

Is there an automated way to convert these all back to straight apostrophes?

Hi Pjs,

If you type doesnt rather than doesn't then Word does have a built in autocorrect entry (actually there are several similar ones)
to add the apostrophe in as 'formatted text' and it contains a 'smart quote' (single in this case) that it puts in no matter what
the setting is in the AutoFormat and Autoformat as you type if you have the Autocorrect option turned on to replace text as you
type.

If those two choices are turned off you can use Edit=>Replace (ctrl+H) and type either a ' or a " in both the 'find what'
and 'replace with' boxes and 'replace all' and Word should replace all of the smart quote marks with 'regular' ones.

Thanks for taking a crack at the answer. I know how to fix the quotes after
the fact. What I REALLY want to do is find an automated way to strip out the
curly apostrophes from my autocorrect file and replace them with straight
ones.

Hi pjs,

If you're never going to want to have the Smart (curly) quotes from Autocorrect entries, one method would be to use the Autocorrect
backup utility from
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/customization/ExportAutocorrect.htm

Backup your Normal.dotm template in Word 2007 (or Normal.dot in earlier versions), unzip the Autocorrect template and double click
it then create the backup of your Autocorrect entries.

In a new document be sure that both of the 'replace quote with Smart quote' entries in the Autoformat tabs
(Alt, T, A) are unmarked
and type
doesnt

If you get the 'smart quote' replacement then open the backup document you just made (again check the Autoformat settings in both
tabs) then

use Edit=>Replace=>Replace All for both
single quote/aspostrophe '
and double quote "
characters.

Save the revised docuument under a new name (in case you might change your mind later or if there is a problem), then close Word.

In Windows explorer double click the Autocorrect template and choose the restore Autocorrect entries button and use your renamed
revised document that should now have any smart quotes removed and test by typing
doesnt
in a new document to see what result you get.
