Remove aborted install from Start-up

M

Martin

I need to remove an aborted install of XP from my Start-up..
I have this working install of XP and was going to add a second XP install
on another partition - it started to install on the same partition as this
working XP install (my C: drive) and i reset my pc to stop the setup
process.

I have edited BOOT.INI to remove any unwanted references, but each time i
start my pc it fails to boot.
I get an error message 'missing or damaged hal.dll' and am prompted to
perform a repair.

If i press F8 at Start-up to give me access to the Boot Menu then i can
select my current working XP and it's boots perfectly.
However, the Boot Menu is set to 'Windows (default)' which is the aborted
install - so i'm having to use the F8 then Boot Menu to get booted.

As well as editing BOOT.INI, i have checked with MSCONFIG yet find no traces
of the aborted XP install.

Can anyone suggest where this unwanted start-up is so that i can remove it?

Thanks a lot.

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Boot.ini is corrupted. Boot to the Recovery Console with the WinXP CD by
hitting "r" before setup starts, logon with the administrator password. Run
"attrib -h -r -s C:\boot.ini" from the command prompt. Then run "del
C\boot.ini" (no quotes) followed by "bootcfg /rebuild" to rebuild it.
