REMOVABLE HARD DRIVE LETTERS IN WINDOWS EXPLORER

I have a number of removable USB hard drives. The entire number of USB
drives were not used at the same time.
In the past: A drive was unplugged, it was not listed in Windows Explorer.
Now the unplugged drives are listed in Windows Explorer.
I want the unplugged drives not to be listed in Windows Explorer.
 
Another poster with a similar problem booted this machine
into Safe Mode (press F8 early during the boot phase) to get
rid of the unused drive letters.
