I keep getting the little box that says remote procedure
call etc and I have 1 minute to save and then it re-
boots. How do I get this to stop? I re-installed
everything and service pack 2 per Microsoft
recommendations

If you connected the PC to the Internet without having first
enabled a firewall, without having first installed an antivirus
application with current virus definition files, and before installing
the KB828471 Hotfix, you're very likely to get infected from any of
the thousands of PCs on the Internet that are constantly broadcasting
the Blaster and/or Welchia worms. It only takes a few seconds of
exposure.

To stay on-line long enough to get the necessary updates, patches,
and removal tools, click Start > Run, and enter "shutdown -a" when the
next RPC countdown begins. This will abort the shut down. Also, make
sure you've enabled a firewall before starting, to preclude any more
intrusions while getting the updates/patches/tools.

You have a virus that's causing this. You probably ran your machine
without a firewall on before installing SP2.

This error is not necessarily a result of virus/spyware. I had this
error also immediately after installing SP2.
My setup:
- computer behind nat router
- protected with Kerio personal firewall
- protected with McAfee virusscanner, automatically kept uptodate
- protected by NOT using Outlook (Express), but Mozilla Mail#
- protected by NOT using Internet Explorer, but Mozilla

Needless to say that this error disappeared after removing SP2.
That turned out to be difficult, because this error occurred even in
Safe mode. Recovery console not available, because not supplied with my
Sony OEM Windows XP Home. I just had to install XP again.
