I have a lap top running XP Home, and a desk top running XP Pro. Does anyone know how to transfer files from the lap top to the desk top through the internet?

Can Remote Desk Top feature accomplish this task?

Your reply is much appreciated.

You can do this using either Remote Desktop or VPN. These are very
different features, but both can be used for your task. However, there are
limitations:

Remote Desktop is a feature found only on XP Pro. So, you would have to
connect FROM the laptop TO the Desktop, and transfer the files then.

VPN is a feature found in both versions of the OS, and can be used either
way--i.e. both machines can host the Incoming VPN connection, and either can
do the "dialling."

Read up on both features in Help and Support. Bear in mind that such a file
transfer may be very slow--even with 'DSL connections, the speed will be
limited by the slower uplink speed.

Hey Bill!!!

I've been wanting to ask you to describe the differences between using VPN
and RDWC.
I'd take it to you via email but yours is spoofed (as is mine ;) )
Is RDWC similar to VPN in its level of security (provided that a hardware
firewall is used, port forwarding is to high # random ports, strong
password, etc.?)

Thanks
Mike

You'll get more security with a VPN (especially an IPSEC one)...

Remote Desktop and the web connection requires access to TCP Port 3389
(and Port 80 for IIS if you use the web connection). These ports are
fixed but can be changed on the server side to any port you wish...

VPN will allow you to access other resources that do not have fixed
ports that are somewhat difficult to configure through the firewall.
