Remote Desktop Port

T

Theresa Parrett

I would like to change the port number used for Remote Desktop from 3389 to
"something else". Does anyone know how this can be done? If so, any
thoughts on problems that might occur? Any thoughts on security of using
remote desktop.

Thanks

To change the listen port for remote desktop:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306759

I use remote desktop everyday(using it right now) and have changed the
listen ports on the two machines I remote into and it works fine. Never had
one problem. Changing the listen port one step in secure remote sessions. I
would also make sure to disbale the guest account and make sure all user
account, including the hidden admin account, have passwords on them. Also
you may have to open the new port in your firewall(if you have no firewall,
stop what your doing right now and install one or turn the xp one on).

You should go to control panel/network connections and right click on LAN or whatever is there. you shoutd then see three tabs, the last of which is advanced(Ithink). Click that and you should see the checkbox for the XP Firewall. Down to the right you will see a button called settings. Click and proceed. You should enable remote desktop which is port 3389. Also you should open control panel/system and click remote tab and make sure that is all good. Now right click on your C drive and select sharing and security. Make sure remote assistance/desktop is not blocked. Start/all programs/accessories/communications/remote connections will give you something to play with. I have had no luck with it. You can enable the HATED windows messenger and it has a fairly easy remote assist to set up. GOOD LUCK!! You'll need it.

The original poster wanted to change the port that remote desktop listens
on. All you have told them is how to let it thru the xp firewall. Good info,
but has nothing to do with what they were asking.

No such thing under sharing and security. This has nothing to do with remote
desktop.

I use remote desktop eveyday, using it right now, and it works fine.
