Remote desktop does not update

I am using RD through a VPN on a broadband connection to
connect to my business XP machine from my home Win2K
machine. The VPN works very well and I get very good
performance on shared files and IP applications.

But RD does not update the screen sometimes for 30 seconds
or more after an interaction. In a command window I can
type a command, hit enter, and wait 60 seconds or more
without the screen showing the command I typed or the
command output. If I wiggle the mouse over the edge of
the command window it seems to stimulate RD to update the
screen. This seems to be a functional problem, not a
network performance issue. My network tools tell me the
there is no network traffic until I wiggle the mouse
around. Sometimes I minimize/restore a window to get it
to update. Similar behaviour with right-click menus. If
I right-click the START button I get no response. If I
then wiggle the mouse around I see the start context menu
flash and then disappear.

Basically it seems that RD does not get the client screen
updated after an interaction until another interaction of
some sort stimulates it to do so.

It is making RD almost useless to me... I've used VNC
before and it worked perfectly. Any idea what the problem
is with RD?

Thanks,
-Mark

After some more experimentation, I find that some types of
GUI interactions (popup and pulldown menus in particular)
do not display unless I move the mouse around. I can
click on a menu bar item and wait forever and the screen
will not update. As soon as I move the mouse around (esp.
over a window edge) the popup displays and then is
immediatly dismissed (because the mouse is away from it).

Ever try to get work done without using any popup or
pulldown menus (including the START button)? I can't
believe I am the only one seeing this...
