Remote Control

Jim

I am going to buy a new computer running Vista 64 bit Home Premium. I will
keep my current computer running Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I will install
the old computer on the 3rd floor of my house. Is there software available
which will enable me to run and control programs, from my new computer, on
my old computer.

Thanks in advance,

JimF

Hi,

To run the programs on the new computer, you would need to install them from
their original installation media. You can't just copy them over or run them
from the old maching and have them on the new one. Only by installing are
necessary registry entries created, system files added, and routines created
to support running the software.

If you want to use the old computer remotely, you can use various remote
programs like RealVNC unless you want to upgrade it to Ultimate first and
use Remote Desktop.

Look at TightVNC, what it does is give you the ability to operate the PC
you are connected to just as if you were sitting at it... There are
others but I don't use them so don't know.

You have to install TightVNC as a "Service" on the remote machine so it
runs all the time, but it can save much wear and tear on the legs.

If your old computer ran Windows XP Pro, or Vista Business or Ultimate, then
you can remotely use the old computer.
Otherwise you will have to use a 3rd party program to do it.
Maybe remote assistance would work, but I have not personally tried that.

Thank you for the reactions. You have pointed me in the right direction.
Thanks again.

You know what, if you are trying to break the killfile record you will
never get a vote from me. I probably should not admit to this but
watching you make a complete ass of yourself is amusing in a quaint sort
of way. Each time you do so makes you look like an idiot and makes me
look better.
