I am using vista HP on my main (Host PC) and I am using xp home on my
laptop. I want to be able to access my home pc from my laptop but the help
file in vista says that you cannot remotely connect to a machine running
vista HP from a machine running XP. However, the website Vistabase
http://www.vistabase.co.uk/kb/networking/enabling-remote-desktop-on-windows-vista
leads me to believe that I can. Can I or can't I is the question?

Are you actually asking about remote desktop control of your XP machine
where you get a copy of the XP desktop in a Window and driver the user
interface like you are sitting at the XP machine. (sometimes called remote
control) or want to remotely control the Vista machine from the XP box.
OR
are you talking about connecting to a file share on the XP system to access
files and data ?

If remote desktop then that is not available on Home Premium but is on
Ultimate. So you cannot remotely control your XP system from Vista. You
also cannot directly remotely control your HP system from XP but you can
send out remote assistance request form the HP to XP.
The link you included was how to turn it on if your version of Vista
supports full remote desktop (such as Ultimate)

If just connecting to a share then that is possible on both Home Premium and
Ultimate
