Remote Assistance....

Howdy! Howdy!

Finally starting to spend a bit of time with Windows XP
Professional. I like what I am seeing. Having a problem
with Remote Assistance. My boss has looked in the
Knowledge Base and I have searched this NG. Have found
nothing so I am turning to you...

Question #1: When I am sitting at my desk and my boss is
sitting at his desk and we initiate Remote Assistance via
MSN Messenger v4.7 it works wonderfully. No issues.
Better than pcAnywhere and VNC. However, it seems that
there is a bit of a problem when trying to do this with
a "remote" computer. If I sit at a "remote" computer (
not attached to our LAN but connected to the Internet via
a serparate Cable Modem ) and my boss sits at his desk (
attached to the LAN ) and I send a request via MSN
Messenger v4.7 he receives it fine. He accepts just
fine. However, there is a problem establishing the
connection. The error is given that:

Remote Assistance connection could not be established
because the remote host name could not be resolved.
Please try again.

The Firewall ports are open to 3389...

Anyone have any tips? We have several clients that are
about 75 minutes awy from Roanoke and Remote Assistance
would be a wonderful thing....

Question #2: When you install MSN Messenger version 6.0
on WINXP Pro systems and then try to use Remote
Assistance ( both computers on the same LAN ) you are
informed that the version is incorrect and invited to
download the correct version. It turns out that it is
MSN XP Messneger version 4.7...

Dumb question of the day: any tips on how to ensure that
we get the right version? I do not deal with any of the
Messenger products and have been doing my best to get rid
of them when I see them. Now we have a legitimate need.
I do not want to tell my clients to go here to download
this or that only to find out that we have download some
other version...

Thanks all,

Cary

To reach my XP at work from home, I connect to work by VPN then use remote
assistant. The ip addresses you see at work are probably behind a router.

Question #2 is my question as well.

The only thing I know is MSN Messenger (MSN-M)6.0 relies
on Windows Messenger (WM) 4.7 or later to be installed
(both on the same system) However, in a scenario last
week, I did have WM 4.7 installed along with MSN-M 6.0.

So I have the same question as #2 below.

Hi Cary

It still sounds like a firewall problem
is there a router ?
and are you using a software firewall ?
where did you open port 3389?
