Remote Assistance

I have a windows 2000 server domain with XP pro and
windows 2000 pro clients. I am migrating all of the
workstations over to XP pro, so eventually all client
systems will be XP pro.I am having issues with Remote
assistance from one XP system to another XP system on the
same LAN and I assume from the outside. I think that some
group policy is blocking it because it says that the
admin has disabled that function.... Now......All my DC's
are Windows 2000 and have no plans changing in the near
future. Windows 2000 Server doesn't have the policy to
enable and the workstations are all ready enabled from
what I see. Does anyone know how to import that group
policy into windows 2000 server and where to get the .msi
possibly......thanks

Hello, what you need is NOT an MSI package. You need to import the
Administrative Templates files (*.adm) from WindowsXP to your Windows2000
Server. You will find this templates in %windir%\inf on both systems. You
can overwrite the current files at your Windows2000 Server with the ones for
XP. Not this will only work for the registry based policy within group
policy.

To take Chriss3's suggestion one step further, I would not import the ADM, I
would actually just administer the GPOs for the Active Directory with an XP
client. This will automatically update the GPO Template and Container (both
parts of the GPO) with the updated templates. Windows 2000 computers can
really confuse the issue of modifying GPOs after the ADM templates have been
brought in from an XP/2003 computer. So, always admin the GPOs with an XP
client after you do it one time.

If you don't want to do this, you MUST copy the ADM templates to ALL domain
controllers winnt\inf folder to ensure they all have the correct ADM files.
Otherwise, you will get strange behavior and undesired outcomes.

That's right. You have to update the adm files to all your Windows 2000
Domain Controllers. But I have done this to few of our clients there we have
a mix of Windows2000 clients and Windows XP clients. I haven't make seen any
issue with using the updates adm files for WindowsXP even to Windows2000
clients. How ever the Supported On Description is written as "At least
Windows2000" and should then applies fine to Windows 2000, Some of the
policies "Only work on Windows2000" "At least Microsoft Windows XP
Professional or Windows Server 2003 family" will only be applied to threes.
