I am trying to add a computer in a different location to my network using a
cable modem, so it will be as though it is directly connected to my network.
And I don't have much knowledge in this area. I am using Windows XP Media
Center Edition 2002 (Service pack 2). Any help would be appreciated. Thank
you.

You have to run the Network Setup Wizard on both machines. The workgroup
name has to be the same on both machines. Select the option to share files
and printers.

How does this computer "in a different location to my network" connect to the
rest of your network? Details here could matter.
# Connected to the same router?
# Connected to a different router?
# Connected to a hub or switch?

Read my article on networking your computers, and see if there's anything useful
there.

Over the pubic internet a safe way is to use a Virtual Private Network
(VPN)...

1. A VPN end-point type router on each end. One example is...

2. Use the built-in XP PPTP VPN server software...

3. A free SSL VPN solution is OpenVPN. This is what I use for secure remote
access to my home LAN...
