Remember what printer to use in a doc file

Can Word 2003 on Win XP Home remember what printer to use with each doc
file? I cannot seem to make this happen. If I print a doc file on a
specific printer, then save that doc file, and then in a subsequent session
reload that doc file, the printer gets reset to the default printer.

I've a bunch of documents which should always print on one printer, another
bunch that should print on a second printer, and so on--they are
special-purpose and customized for their target printer.

Lotus WordPro remembers. Would like to replicate this in Word. Have not
found how in the help system or on Google.

Couldn't one write a macro to be run upon opening any document created
with the particular template in which the default printer would be
changed to the desired printer? Another macro could be run
automatically upon closing the document. This wouldn't be quite the
same thing (the default printer would actually be changed, which would
affect any other documents open at the same time, as well, but it
would be close enough and should work if only one document were to be
open at a time.

The printer to be used is not a function of the template but of what I put
in the file. Having built the file, I select a printer to print. This is
the setting I want to stick.

Word 2003 has something called "variables" that seem to stick to the
document across sessions. I guess I will write a macro to keep track of the
printer assigned to the document by using one of these variables. At print
time, via macro, I will save the currently-active printer, change the
printer to use the remembered printer appropriate for the doc file, print
the file, and then restore the active printer to whatever it was before I
hit print. This will work for me (although I do not know if it will work
correctly when "Print" is selected from an explorer right-mouse-click
context menu while Word is closed).
