Release IP address?

I use cable for internet. I switch between two different machines. Each
time I switch, the computer won't go online. I have to turn the modem off,
unplug it, clear out all the temp and cache folders on the computer, then
plug the modem back in. This is tedious.

I suspect the address is "kept" for a certain amount of time before a new
address is provided. Is there a way I can use a run command to make the
computer or modem release the address? It's DHCP automatic configuration.

Buy a router.

This will "isolate" your machines from your
cable modem, which "locks" itself to the first
MAC address it sees and won't allow you to switch
unless you power cycle it.

Enter this address from your Web browser and see
if you get your cable modem Configuration screen:

192.168.100.1

If you see that it's a Motorola, you can go to Configuration
screen and punch the Restart Cable Modem button which has
the same effect as power cycling it.

But that's a PITA. Just get a router. They're cheap.

I think Vance gave the best solution, that is buy a router.

Anybody wanna buy me a router? I hear they're cheap. I have been borrowing
money for three years to go to school. I'm a baby boomer. Soon I hope to
be able to support myself and earn some money. Right now my monthly income
is -2,000. That's MINUS 2,000. What does "cheap" mean? :-)

$39.95 for Netgear WGR614 v6, my current stable wireless
router of choice. 3 ads for this price last Sunday paper.

Non-wireless routers are probably even cheaper.

Thanks so much, guys. I'll be in the market for a router soon. In the
meantime, the 192.168.100.1 address WORKS PERFECTLY! I saved it as a
bookmark. Now it's just three or four clicks -- and presto! I can connect
the other computer. I LOVE IT!
