relaying denied

I have an IMAP account setup as my primary email
account. I can send messages to other accounts on the
same system, but I cannot send messages to accounts on
other systems for some reason. I keep getting the same
message back as:

relaying denied
proper authentication required

I have had this same problem before, but I don't know how
it was resolved. Help is appreciated here in Louisiana.

You need to turn on authentication to your outgoing server. You can do so
on the "Outgoing Server" tab for your mail account.
