relative links in powerpoint presentation imbedded into web page

Hi Matt,

Keep in mind that since you're posting PPS files, they're
being pulled down into the cache on the local computer.
I'm sure that's got something to do with it, but I can't
find anything definitive about why it's ok with 2002 and
not with 2000/97. Look at this faq:
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00189.htm

Also from the www.pptfaq.com site:

Other things that make links break
Grouping: If you apply links and action settings to shapes
in PowerPoint 2000 (or later) and then group the shapes,
the links still work in slide show view. When you play the
same presentation back in PowerPoint 97 or the Viewer, the
links don't work. Neither PPT97 nor the Viewer can "see"
links within groups.

Path Length: In at least some versions of PowerPoint,
links to sounds (and possibly other file types) will break
if the total path to the file ( ie, the C:\My Documents\My
Sounds\My Sounds Of My Baby\Gurgling\GooGooGahGah.WAV ) is
longer than 122 characters. Thank you, Frank, for the four
otherwise wasted hours it took you to research this. The
rest of you, blow a kiss in Frank's direction for saving
you hours of stress.

Hi,

I am having a problem and would be VERY grateful for any advice....

A bunch of powerpoint presentations were created with the
intent to imbed them into a website (via an iframe if that
makes any difference) and viewed from IE6. They were
created in Powerpoint 97 as .pps files.
They work beautifully when Microsoft office 2002 is
installed on the client viewing the site; however there is
a strange issue when a client tries to access the site
with Office 2000 and 97: Hyperlinks that link to relative
files try to find them on the clientâ?Ts local machine.
For example, a link that looks like â?ofile.htmâ? (a file
in the same directory), would be changed to:
C:\WINDOWS\Local%20Settings\Temporary%20Internet% 20Files\Content.IE5\H9AD1F7X\file.htm
C:\WINDOWS\Local%20Settings\Temporary%20Internet%
20Files\Content.IE5\OTAJSHIV\ file.htm
C:\WINDOWS\Local%20Settings\Temporary%20Internet%
20Files\Content.IE5\H9AD1F7X\ file.htm
C:\WINDOWS\Local%20Settings\Temporary%20Internet%
20Files\Content.IE5\0L6Z8TYN\ file.htm
This would of course break the link. On computers using
a newer version of Office, the link works fine.
Here is the website:

http://io.champlain.edu/~court/ (Click on â?
oConsiderationsâ? and move through the slide show till
you reach the large â?oClick Hereâ? linkâ?"the is the
link that only works on computers with new versions of
office).
Is there any way to fix this so that clients using old
versions of office will be able to use this link?

At first I thought it was a cache issue also. I dumped the cache and made sure the client was seeing the newest version of the PPS. On a MS 2000 box with Office 2000 installed, the first time I accessed the site the problem appeared. Since this was the client's first visit to the site, it doesn't make sense that it would have been cached.

I am starting to assume that since earlier versions of MS PowerPoint were designed to only be read locally, early versions of Office are trying to make my relative paths relative to the local machine
