Subject: Re-Installing XP Professional 1/17/2004 8:52 AM PST

Sorry for the cross-post..

I learned that the person that installed XP used a pirated copy. I am unable to install the update patch. I have purchased my own version of XP Professional and will be reinstalling the operating system. Is there anything I need to be careful of when reinstalling XP? Is there an easier way around fixing my problem without have to totally reinstall the operating system

Thanks

If you know your copy of Windows is pirated, just reformat your hard drive and install the version that you bought. It's best not to get in trouble because someone else wanted to save some money and break the law.

Have the same problem. There has to be a way to install the legit program without having to do a complete format or reinstall. That would mean that you would lose all of your settings and data. I cannot afford to do that because of my business. I have tried to install a brand new out of the box version and I keep getting a message "This version of windows xp cannot be upgraded. The option to upgrade will not be available". If this is Micrsofts way of getting back at pirates it is very wrong because I do not believe they care, its us end users that pay. The only way that I found out that my copy was pirated was when I tried to download sp1. There has to be a way to install without losing all of the data.
Somebody please help!!!!

And what sort of business are you running if you never perform an
incremental backup?! If you have irreplaceable data on your system you
should backup regularly. I bet your system's not connected to a UPS either,
is it? You should image your drive at least once a month - and preferably to
a removable drive or removable media at least (DVD burners aren't that
expensive anymore and it would only take five discs to image a 20GB
partition) so there really is no excuse. You can pick up a Lite-On dual
burner for under £90 (though I can't vouch for the quality or longevity as
I've never used one - I have a Sony) and DVD-RWs (you should always use
rewriteable media as, obviously, you might want to reimage at a later date
and it's a waste of discs to use DVD-Rs). I bought a spindle of 20 DVD-RWs
for £10 the other day, and they're not a crappy make either (Datasafe). That
makes them (GB for GB) cheaper than CD-RWs.

I certainly wouldn't want to do business with someone who doesn't have the
first clue about data protection and back-up.
