I have reinstalled Win XP HE on my laptop and find that there is no modem
installed and have tried all the disks but no joy.
Also the picture is very small. The dpi setting is 96 normal and I cant'
move the pointer to increase the size. Also the dpi setting window is greyed
out
I am using my desktop with Win 98SE in the meantime
Can anyone help please

Laptops require specialized drivers. Visit the support website of
the manufacturer of your laptop and download the Windows XP
drivers for your video adapter and modem.

You're assuming that MS includes all device drivers on the CD, which is
not the case.
Hopefully, your laptop maker has the drivers you need on their website.

You need to download the XP specific drivers from the laptop manufacturer
web site. XP does not have specilized hardware drivers for laptop or
desktops manufactured after XP was released.
