Reinstalling TCP/IP & networking components (maybe)

I just got off the phone with Microsoft tech support, and
since I'm running Win2k as a home user, it's either pay
over 200 bucks or seek the infinite wisdom of the net. So.
I have DSL through MSN, and it malfunctioned today. I
tried resetting the modem several times, which normally
fixes the problem, but no dice, so I called MSN. They
determined my computer was talking to my modem, and I could
ping myself, but I couldn't reach anything else. I then
noticed McAfee's auto-updater was somehow making (very
slow) progress downloading an update. I told the tech guy
that, and he said they'd somehow decided I need to
"reinstall the TCP/IP and networking components."

After finding out I couldn't get support from Microsoft via
phone, I decided to muck about a bit with my computer. I
looked through some of the help files on TCP/IP, and found
the troubleshooter, which led me to look at the system log.
One of the error messages for TCP/IP said this:

The system detected that network adapter Realtek
RTL8139(A)-based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter was disconnected
from the network, and the adapter's network configuration
has been released. If the network adapter was not
disconnected, this may indicate that it has malfunctioned.
Please contact your vendor for updated drivers.

I happen to have 2 ethernet cards installed on my computer,
so I unplugged the ethernet cable going to my DSL modem and
plugged it into the other card. I still couldn't connect
to the 'net, so I switched them back. And then a miracle
occured. Suddenly I was able to connect, so here I am (the
Microsoft lady's only suggestion on how to get free support
was coming here).

If anybody has any clue what all this means, I'd really
really appreciate the help. I don't know if maybe the MSN
guy was full of it and there's maybe just something wonky
with my ethernet card, or what. If I do need to reinstall
the TCP/IP and networking components, how do I do that?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I'd try uninstalling the network cards and reinstalling them with the
manufacturer's updated drivers from their website.
