Reinstalling Outlook Express

Outlook Express has been uninstalled from my computer and even Outlook
will not run without it there, so I am basically without email. To
reinstall OE I seem to need to reinstall Internet Explorer. I have
downloaded the latest installation files and the setup will not run, as
it says I have a newer version on the system.
From web searches I have found that I can by pass this check by setting
a registry Key to indicate that IE is not installed and by running the
setup with the /Q option.

The installation runs fine then reboots, but on restart XP starts
complaining about "End Point Not Found" and that "AssocGetPerceivedType
could not be found in SHLWAPI.dll". The error is reported 3 times by
winlogon.exe, lsass.exe and services.exe.

The system then complains about msgina.dll not being loaded and only
offers the option to reboot - which gets me back to the shlwapi errors
over again.

I cannot boot into safe mode and my only option seems to be reverting
to the last good configuration. Doing this gets the computer back, but
I still do not have Outlook Express.

I have a boot disk running and it seems that the shlwapi.dll file is
good - I have even tried replacing it with a newer version, but no
solution.

I am lothe to dump my data and start again with a fresh install of the
OS just to get OE back, but that is where I am heading if I cannot find
the answer.

Does anyone have any pointers?

How did you uninstall OE, please?

1a. Try:

1b. If OE is not an option there:

Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components >
Outlook Express (check).

How did you uninstall OE, please?
A tech support person decided to 'clean up' my system. I am not sure
what he did or why OE had to be uninstalled, only that the computer was
left in the current unstable state.
The OE directory is empty and the registry entry for OE has only two
keys: (Default) : (value not set), and Version : 6,0,2900,2180. which
seems to suggest an uninstaller was used
1a. Try:
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Set Program Access and Defaults > Choose default mail program
Outlook Express is an option there. When I check it and click OK and
go back to the page it has been deselected and "Use my current e-mail
program" is set.
1b. If OE is not an option there:
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components > Outlook Express (check).
Outlook Express is checked. I have tried unchecking it, exiting
re-entering the settings then re-checking it, but that only seems to
add shortcuts to the desktop.

I have uninstalled SP2 and Outlook Express has been restored! I hadn't
considered doing an unistall as a form of system recovery.

Now to re-apply SP2 and all should be well :-)

Thank you for your help.

You're welcome & thanks for posting back. (That sounds like a "tech support
person" to avoid in the future, David.)

typical so called "techie" with an ego problem. We have them at my
college, they disable useful things such as the ability to use CTRL + N
in Internet Explorer.
