reinstalling a dll file

After not using my computer for 4 weeks I tried to boot it & could not. I
use the Windows Home version of XP. I use a password & it would not accept
the password. I ran the computer in safe mode & apparenrly did the wrong
thing because when I tried to access XP I got the following message.
"Missing File <windows root>\system 32\hal.dll" I do not know how to do this
or if it can be done at all. I installed another copy without erasing the
copy that is missing the dll file. My problem is that I have to start from
scratch & would rather not have to do this. Is there any way that this file
can be installed on my initial XP operating system?

Hal.dll is a system file that is custom built during the installation
process to match the actual hardware contained in the computer.

In order to replace/rebuild the file you need to do a Repair Install
of your Windows XP as per the instructions at
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.html

Good luck

Hi Ron, Thanks for answering my call for help. I went the repair route many times in the past few days, but to no avail. My problem is that I can only boot to Windows with the clean install. I guess I will have to go the manual route of installing everything all over again if I can find every program that I had installed. I would have thought that when the repair console ran from the installation CD all the required files would have been added, but it did not seem to happen.

Please note that doing a Repair Install and booting to the Recovery
Console are two entirely different functions.

Did you do the full Repair Install as described at
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.html ?
