Reinstallation/Repair Question

I have a problem with the partition Windows XP Home Edition is installed on.
I've tried to reinstall from the CD, trying to get to the Repair Mode.
However, I'm asked for the product key. I have no idea where this is as I
installed XP quite a while back. I'll continue hunting through things to
find the jewel case or paper container the CD came in (no idea which it was,
since it has been such a long time since I did the install), but thought I'd
ask for help on this newsgroup. Is there anyway I can get to the repair
mode. Is the install key on my system somewhere.

Another issue is that XP Pro comes with a utility which can fix a partition,
but XP Home edition does not. Is there any way to get this utility to fix my
partition.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Go to www.belarc.com and downlaod The Belarc Advisor. When installed and run
it will list your CD key code.

XP Pro utilities not in Home are only available if you buy Pro.

I downloaded the program into the Windows ME partition and it gave
information on Windows ME and the programs on the ME partition. Whatever is
wrong with the damaged partition XP Home resides on apparently prevented the
Belarc Advisor from seeing anything there.

I was able to download a program that, in DOS mode, can read the NTFS
partition, so I know (probably most) of the files are still there.

I can't afford to buy XP Pro, particularly without knowing if one of its
utilities will help with my situation.

Can you suggest a way the Belarc Advisor might look at the NTFS partition.

Another idea is to buy an external hard drive, dump everything on the
original hard drive on to the external drive, reformat the original drive,
and reload the original hard drive. Aside from being an expensive and
timeconsuming, it could work.

I have to believe there is some way that I can get the Key so I can use the
original XP Home CD and get to repair mode and fix things that way.

Any further ideas sincerely appreciated.

You can't get the XP Key from Windows ME !
You have to have a Bootable XP running to get an XP key !
If your Windows XP will boot, search www,google.com, download and run
MagicJellyBean. It will extract the XP key then.

There is often a sticker on the PC case which has the product key. Check it
over.
