reinstallation problem

i need to put windows xp back in my pc,my pc says it does
not recognize the serial number,iv been very careful not
to have a error in transcription of this number, how can
i do a reinstall of xp,
i get a error message thats says the serial number is
invalid,im stuck what can i do, michael
