My computer came with a previous version of Windows and I upgraded to XP SP2
& have that disk. I want to reformat my HD and reinstall as things are
running slower than sloooooooow. I know there is a way to let me reinstall
the XP SP2 directly rather than having to restore it to the previous version
then upgrade that again. How do I do this please?

Thanks in advance... Bob

The requirement to use an upgrade version is to *own* a previous qualifying
version's installation CD, not to have it installed. When setup doesn't find
a previous qualifying version installed, it will prompt you to insert its CD
as proof of ownership. Just insert the previous version's CD, and follow the
prompts. Everything proceeds quite normally and quite legitimately.

I think I remember doing that last time. Was there an extra steop though?
My previouse version is on a system restore disc supplied from Compaq rather
than a Microsoft Windows CD per se.

Yes, you can also do a clean installation if you have an OEM restore CD of a
previous qualifying version rather than an installation CD. It's more
complicated, but it *can* be done. First restore from the Restore CD. Then
run the XP upgrade CD from within that restored system, and change from
Upgrade to New Install. When it asks where, press Esc to delete the
partition and start over.

Ken,

I'm not sure what you mean when when you say "change from upgrade to new
install"
