Reinstall Windows XP

G

Guest

I was given a computer to which I do not have administrator rights and none
of the CD's that would go with it. I am interested in reinstalling the
operating system. If I purchase a new version of Win XP should there be any
problems with the reinstall considering the limitations I mentioned?

Thanks.

Should not be any problem since you don't want anything of the old system,
you will just format when you install the new CD and build upon that
installation.

A clarification that may help with the question you ask below: it's not that
you don't have administrator rights to the computer, it's that you don't
have adminstrator rights to the Windows installation on it.

Good! That's always the best thing to do with a used computer.

No. If you buy a new version, you get the CD, and when you install it, you
decide who gets administrator rights.

No should be no problems. I recommend you do a clean install, deleting
the old partition and have XP recreate it and format it as part of the
install process. This will prevent any problems from the old
installation from carrying over. See this link for how to do a clean
install: http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

Make sure you get the XP compatible drivers for the chipset, video,
sound, network and other devices in the computer and have them copied to
a CD so they can be installed after XP is installed.

Nope, you can install from new media just fine.
