Reinstall win2K Pro

It runs fine, but if I try to change some of the settings the screen
flashes, the control-alt-delete screens operate very slowly and don't
actually kill anything, and the only thing I can do is flip the switch
on the power strip. Next boot looks normal and everything works. As
long as I leave the settings alone everything is fine. (More details
supplied if necessary.)

I spent a reasonable amount of time downloading MS "essential" updates.
If I do a reinstall from the original CD will I have to go through all
that downloading again?

Crap. Oh well, I didn't really need to make any of those changes anyway.

Is there a good way of transferring a whole win2K system to a new
HD/machine yet? When I checked a year or so ago both ghost and Acronis
(?) were problematical -- sometimes worked and sometimes didn't.

AFAIK they both should work fine. The disk manufacturer's also provide these
utilities.

I was unable to copy a working win2K system to a new drive. I was
unable to put the working win2k drive into a new machine. Some Official
Windows Transfer Facility (can't remember what) said yup, everything
transferred fine, except the machine wouldn't boot. Ultimately I ended
up building a whole new system in the new machine with a new drive, but
the whole thing was traumatic -- not so much for what had happened but
for what it said about the future.

BTW, is it the custom here to eliminate previous postings from new messages?

We've no idea what "unable to copy" and "the machine wouldn't boot" means.
Keep in mind we're not there and can't read the error messages on screen
when this happens.

Sorry, it was over 1.5 years ago and the details have faded. I thought
we were supposed to remember stuff better that we were really angry
about, but I guess not.
