Reinstall of Windows XP

I have had to reinstall XP. I now find that although all
my programs are shown when I ook in Windows explorer they
are not appearing on the start - all programs menu. How
can I get this back. With Windows 98 you could reinstall
and everything remained the same but for some reason with
XP it doesn't. The old version of XP had to be deleted

It depends how you do the reinstall. You boot the CD, start Setup
Windows and after the license have the choice of Repair (what you
wanted) or New Install. If you take New Install and just dump the
system onto the old partition it starts a new registry without any of
the installation info for programs. To get a clean one (which is what I
suggest you do now after backing up data), you hit ESC at that point,
select and delete the present partition and create a new one.
