I noticed a bunch of domain names in the following registry path:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFALT\SOFTWARES\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\InternetSetting\\ZoneMap\Domains

What are these domain names with extensions such as com, net, etc. for?
I checked other two PCs but there is none with these PCs.

Hi,

The sites that you added to the security zones in Internet Explorer are
available in the registry key you mentioned.

From:

Description of Internet Explorer security zones registry entries:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182569/

ZoneMap

The ZoneMap key contains the following keys:
. Domains
. ProtocolDefaults
. Ranges

The Domains key contains domains and protocols that have been added to
change their behavior from the default behavior. When a domain is added, a
key is added to the Domains key. Subdomains appear as keys under the domain
where they belong. Each key that lists a domain contains a DWORD with a
value name of the affected protocol. The value of the DWORD is the same as
the numeric value of the security zone where the domain is added.

First - you can never compare registry settings between computers.
Second - the "settings" you are referring to are related to Internet Explore
settings on that computer. Internet sites are often referred to as domains
e.g. Microsoft.com. Earthlink.net, Comcast.net and so forth.
Third - (No offense meant) your post indicates you should not be "poking"
around the registry (Easy way to mess up the computer)..

Thanks everyone for your responses.
I was cleaning registry by manually removing registry entries related to
an application software which was uninstalled, and during that process I
happened to notice what I queried about in my origianl post.

The MS reference says that "the domains are added to the registry when
they are added to the security zone". It does not seem to mean that the
domains are those added to the "Trusted sites" with IE because I checked
this but there is only one entry. Exactly what action taken by the PC
user causes domains to be added to the Domains of registry? Is there a
way to check what domains have been added other than reviewing registry?
How can I remove those domains?

Most times these "Domains" get populated by tools such as the
Immunize function of Zone Alarm to enter Restricted Zone sites.
It relates to how IE uses multiple zones for site security polices.

I am not using Zone Alarm or something similar, so I do not know how it
happened. How can I remove them? Can I just delete them from the registry?
