I have a user that "accidentally" deleted
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID from the registry. Now his
outlook will not connect to the exchange server. User
has reinstalled outlook and did a dirty install of win2k.
I am figuring that this accident is the root of his
problem. Is there anyway to get that registry entry back
short of formatting and reinstalling win2k from scratch?

You mean any way other than restoring from a full registry backup? Do
you have such a backup and is it recent? What (if anything) is in %
systemroot%\repair\RegBack\ ?

Hello Hunter,

Your best bet may be to export the entire HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID registry
key from a working machine that is as similar as possible to this machine,
then import the key into the damaged machine. It would seem that if he
deleted the entire CLSID key and subkeys he would have quite a few problems.

Alternately you may be able to export a local copy of this key from

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID

It may not be entirely complete though but it may be better then importing
from the other machine.

Once you export this key as a .reg file you will need to edit the .reg file
so it IMPORTS back to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID.

There really is no garunty that the steps above will work, just tryin to
give you some ideas. Deleting or importing incorrect registry keys may
render this system unbootable.

You may need to rebuild the box to regain full functionality.
