System Restore was likely set by default, so unless you specifically
disabled it you should check to see if backups have been made.
start button \ programs \ accessories \ system tools \ system restore
In any event Restore sometimes fails, and it's a good idea to have a
second type of backup. Frequently recommended here is erunt.zip, a
