New thread regarding ongoing problem with corrupted registry. I was following
KB 307545 to correct registry problem. I was able to rename the current
registry files (Default, SAM, Security, Software, System) and was even able
to get system up in Safe Mode to do some additional editing. But then system
crashed again... I went into Windows\System32\Config directory (via Recovery
Console) and noticed that the dates on a couple of the registry files were
changed and I could no longer bring system up in Safe Mode. I then deleted
the registry files and once again copied files from \Windows\Repair
directory, I did DIR after I was finished to make sure the files were indeed
there. I then tried to bring the system up in Safe Mode but receive error
message indicating that Windows\System32\Config\System is either corrupted or
missing...If I go back in via Recovery Console, sure enough SYSTEM is
missing... I've been through this three times with the same result. Any
suggestions?

Joe,
I am sorry to hear that your follow thru on kb 307545 did not succeed. I just wonder if you followed the rest of its steps in Safe mode.

IF and only if you have not done anything since your last (this) post, just consider this.

When the pc is booting up ,Tap F8 Function key to get bootup options. Tap & keep repeat tapping F8 !

When presented with bootup choices, select Last Known Good Configuration.

Joe,
One other tip, providing you are still stuck.

Repeat F8 startup steps, get bootup menu, then select
"Safe Mode with Command Prompt". See if you can get that.

The MS Knowledge Base article noted below, may help in restoring a "prior XP System Restore point",
in the case where you are unable to do this from a Windows session.

The article describes how to start the System Restore tool when you are unable to start your Windows XP-based computer normally or
in Safe mode.
You may be able to do it from a "special command prompt"..."Safe Mode with Command Prompt".

It would seem the requirements are:
1. Your system HD still has restore point(s) from before. (Which also means System Restore is active on your XP.)
2. You have to be able to "selectively" bootup your pc into "Safe mode with command prompt".
3. Follow the directions to use "rstrui.exe" the XP System Restore program.
