Registry problem

First of all I have to admit to causing this problem due to some over
zealous editing! I was attempting to re-install a program which kept
on saying it was already installed despite the correct unnstall via
control panel. I had to go through the registry and delete al
references to it and it would seem that I have deleted a key
incorrectly!

When I try to run msconfig I get this message --

"The system could not find the environment option that was entered"

and if I try to go to the secuity centre I get this message --

Windows cannot find %windir%\\system32\\wscui.cpl

Looks like I have deleted some environment variable(s) so does anyone
know how to recover them please?

TIA

cheers,
Len

Hello,

Try this:

1) Follow the instructions listed under Option 2 here:

http://www.jimmah.com/vista/Administration/locked_out_of_admin.aspx

2) Log in to your computer using the newly visible account named
"Administrator"

3) Open a command prompt (click start, type: cmd, press enter)

4) Type the following command exactly and press enter:

setx WINDIR C:\Windows /M

5) Restart your computer

If this fixes your computer and you want to turn off the "Administrator"
account, you can do so like this:

- Click start
- Type: cmd
- Right-click cmd.exe when it appears and click Run As Administrator
- Type the following command exactly and press enter:

net user administrator /active:no

Jimmy,
That has fixed part of the problem but not all!! I can get
into system restore now BUT the odd thing is that it tells me that
there are no restore point on the C drive? I know for certain I
created at least 2 last night before the edit. There are restore
points on other drives but not C:. Anyway I can only run things like
msconfig if I cd into windows/system32 and run it from there. Anywhere
else and it tells me that it doesn't know what the command is. I also
have security alerts tellng me that AVG and Defender aren't working
when I know for sure that they are.

Any other ideas please?

cheers,
Len

Ok ...

please open a command prompt (start -> run -> type cmd -> press enter) and
type the following command:

set

and press enter, then copy the output from that command and paste it into a
reply.

Len,

I may be wrong, but I think Bob Eyster was speaking about the registry
backup itself. Did you back up the registry before altering it?
Have a nice day.

You are having some serious install/uninstall problems; you may indeed have a
corrupt registry. Please see these two tutorials for help with
install/uninstall problems and your Repair Vista Options. If these fail to
help, you might need to run a good registry scanner/cleaner.

In the end I decided to bite the bullet and clone my boot disk from a
copy I had made a couple of days ago. I think something went seriously
wrong with the registry so this was the easy way to recover it all.
Glad to say it all worked fine and I am now back to a stabel state
again.

Thanks for all the advice and help on this one but I think I deleted
some rather vital registry entires my mistake!

Some time ago I did just what you did and since then I use Erunt to backup
my registry. It's free and you can have it backup daily if you want.
If you play around in the registry it is a must-have prog. :-)

I also have that but I thought it was only for XP? Is it Ok with
Vista? I did have a complete backup made with Genie Backup but it was
a bit older than the disk clone I had made. Maybe I am a bit mad but I
usually make a complete clone of my boot drive once a week using
Acronis 10. It certainly saved me this time!

If you click the link you will see it's ok with Vista.
I limit my boot drive clones to one a month! :-)
