Registry Permissions

I recently had to repartition and reformat my hard drive
(NTFS). I did clean install of XP Pro and set myself up
as the administrator. When trying to install several
programs I was unable to proceed because the permissions
in the registry were not set to "full control". After
setting the appropriate keys to full control I was able
to install the programs. Why doesn't XP set this
automatically for me since I'm the system administrator?
This computer is stand alone and not on a network.

You did not state what keys or software.
Is it possible that the permissions in the registry
are no longer at the installation defaults ?
