Sorry put post in odd place before as not used to forums etc, so here we go
again. I need basic knowledge about Registry and then continous knowledge so
that I may know, understand and be able - when confident, to edit my
registry! I know I have a load of junk on my laptop that needs taking off but
dare not touch until I know what I am doing. Unfortunately my VAIO Laptop
came with a load of junk which I have uninstalled but which is in the
Recovery Area and does not help if I do have to recover - as it is e x t r e
m e l y long winded! Can anyone point me to the right direction where I can
gain Thorough Knowledge please?

Since you have/are uninstalling the 'free' apps that were supplied, there's
very little reason to do anything in the registry.
What more junk are you referring to?

ah so.....
there is a school of registry and
it takes virtually a lifetime to master.
but supposedly, when you have obtained
the required wisdom, you will be able
to grab the peanut out of the palm of the
great master.....

however, we americans like to cheat....

look for a program exactly called "RegCleaner 4.3"
it was a freeware but highly improved upon by
the author. But there are a number of websites
that store and distribute exceptional program
like the above....

may the peanut be with you.......

Sorry I did not mean to sound insulting by saying Junk as of course those
programs are another perons treasure but it is annoying that these Try to
Buy's, (not free)are put on, that you have to install them firstly to
uninstall them, in the first place! I have been told that although I have
uninstalled these programs that the registry keys are still there
(true/false?) as all those programs are in the recovery section of my Vaio of
which I beleive I cannot do anything about, as recovery brings it back to the
initial state when purchased and also that you cannot do a clean install of
windows without the rest as then the PID is not recognised. When you do Vaio
Media Recovery disc's everything is put back on again and you have to go
through the same old process which is very time consuming! I have actually
heard recently of one clean install , which took the person months to do,
obviously she has major experience & knowledge that I lack, but it did result
in her not being able to use automatic/manual Vaio updates featured with all
Vaio's. I still wish to gain all the knowledge I can about Registry from
Basics upwards and would really appreciate help where I can study this in one
place if possible. I'm certainly no whizz but think this is important to know
about registry, permissions etc. Can you help?

Cheers for that, DataBaseBen - but I can cheat when I know what I am doing
and seeing as I don't have a clue, a cheat would be useless to me in the
first place, but thanks so much for the thought!

It's my opinion, from your post, that you may not be ready to tackle the
reigistry yet, but here are a few links to get started with. Use your
favorite search engine to find many more links, probably more in tune with
what you're looking for.
Example from your post: "basic" at first, then "thorough" at end. Etc.

I do however commend you for the effort and hope you do succeed.

"Microsoft Windows Registry Guide Second Edition"
Author: Jerry Hunnicut
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Cost: $44.99

Don't expect to become an expert by just glancing through this book.

Jim

Its true registry entries may be left behind, its also a debatable as to
whether these orphan entries make any difference to the
operation/performance of win.
