Registry Key Permission Change in Windows Vista

Greg Zeldin

Hi. I am having difficulties launching Apple QuickTime Player 7.1.3 on
Microsoft Windows Vista build 6000. I get "Error 46: Could not load or find
the QuickTime ActiveX control." After troubleshooting the problem with
Microsoft Process Monitor 1.01 I traced the root cause of the error down to
permissions on the HKCR\QTOControl.QTControl and HKCR\QTOControl.QTControl.1
registry keys. To resolve the problem I need to grant Read permission on
these keys to the Administrators group. When I use Registry Editor to
change
permissions for these keys, I get the following error: "Unable to save
permission changes on QTOControl.QT.Control. Access is denied." Any idea on
how I can make this registry key permission change? Thank you.

You could try taking Ownership of the Key(s) in question, and then change
the Permissions.
Whether this will solve your base problem or not, I have no idea, but at
least it will allow you to change the Permissions.
Might want to export the Key(s) first, in case something goes horrible
wrong.

First, make sure you are logged in as SOME kind of Administrator.
Right click the Key, then Permissions. In the Security Tab (which you will
be in by default anyway), click the Advanced Button. Click the Owner Tab. In
the Change Owner To box in the middle, choose your own login or
Administrators (assuming you are one). Click the Apply Button. OK out of
everything, then go back, Right click the Key, choose Permissions again,
click Advanced again, click the account you want to change (your own,
Administrators, etc), click the Edit Button, change any Permissions you
like, OK out of everything. Reboot, and see if your problem is fixed.

Thank you for your quick response, Max. How do I take the ownership of the
key? Here are the only options I have:

Thanks,
Greg.

Hi Greg--

You've gotten good instruction--but I'm surprised you're having the problem
because so many of us use Quick Time now for Itunes with the Ipod if nothing
else and I haven't run into any permissions problem. But if permissions is
in the way, by all means take them.

If you're still having trouble, uninstall and reinstall Quick Time. I
always watch on the install to tweak that it doesn't take over WMP's showing
movies as a default because I hate the QT movie interface.

Will Stevie Jobs extend that Iphone into a full fledged computer to compete
with the Apple Mac? I bet he does, but maybe not the first ones this
summer. Will MSFT get into the phone business? Does a bear "roam" in the
Washington (snowing right now) woods?

Will both of them become big content delivery partners with the
Hollywood/New York production shops? Of course.

Good luck,

CH

Fitzie: Haul Cheney's fat ass into that courtroom and slice him up. You
should have indicted Cheney as a co-conspirator and you know it. Cheney
will fight you and stone wall doing anything in that trial every nanostep of
the way. Call his bluff and blow off your petty little pipsqueak of a boss
Mr. Gonzales. He's an administration whore.

Thank you so much Max. Your instructions worked as a charm. QuickTime
still won't start as I found a whole bunch of keys that still have no owner.
I am going to delete them and try to re-install the app. may be that helps.
Thanks again!

Chad, it is actually a common problem for some users according to what I
found on Google. Setting read permissions to all users on
HKCR\QTOControl.QTControl\CLSID and HKCR\QTOControl.QTControl.1 registry
keys resolved the error.
