First things first: Save That Data! Copy the important data to a PC
(create a folder just for this data, do _not_ copy to My Documents, or
else you will a hell of a time picking it out form all the other files.)
If you have a CD burner, copy to a CD-R. (Burn at 4x to ensure data
integrity - higher speeds can cause errors, OK when playing back music,
but when storing data.)

Then Repair from the Safe Mode (press F8 during boot), then copy the
data back to the laptop. NB: if some of that important stuff consists of
software, this will not work, as software almost always puts pieces of
itself in the WINNT folder during installation. These pieces may be
destroyed during Repair, so it's important to have installation files
(ZIPS, *.exe's, or install disks or CDs)for such software.

Friendly hint: In future, regularly back up important data to another
machine or a CD. You could also create a seocnd partition on your HDD,
and store all your data there - when you have repair W2K again, that
data will not be touched, since it won't be on the W2K partition.

Good Luck!

If the software hive is corrupt, it may be possible to rename the software
hive found in;
%windir%\system32\config\software
to software.old
then copy the most recent backup found in
%windir%\repair\regback
as
%windir%\system32\config\software

If that fails you can copy/ use the file
%windir%\repair\software
This file is an image of the hive at the time the OS was installed, so you'd
have to reinstall all software. This being the case you might just as well
blow it away and start a new install. (note: this would at least allow you
to start the OS to make any necessary backups prior to wiping the drive.)

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Once the password has been
validated, you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access
to the hard disk. You can only access the following folders on your
computer: %systemroot% and %windir%

Yes I've come across this on google.the prob is I don't know how to copy/
use the file %windir.....
how can I do this from the c:\winnt or c:\windows folder? that's all I can
access from the win2k cd options

When I go to install.win2k over the present install it warns we that
everything will be deleted. Is it possible to install win2k without losing
the files that I want to keep?

%windir% = the windows directory so in your case
C:\winnt
So in place of using the variable you can use 'C:\winnt' everywhere I used
%windir%
