Carried out procedures in "How to recover registry....." after getting the
c:\windows\system32\config\system file corrupt or missing error. Able to get
into windows when I used the registry files from the windows\repair folder
(as per the instructions), but have tried registry files from last 3 restore
points and the system keeps hanging just before the welcome screen - i.e. no
user accounts appear, Ctrl-Alt-Del has no effect either in ordinary or safe
mode.
chkdsk from the recovery console is indicating some problems with the hard
disk - doesn't explain why it works with the old (repair) registry files at
least I can get my data off to DVD if it comes to a re-build.

Hi Dave,

The registry damage and restore point corruption could be a direct
result of disk damage. I would suggest getting any data off NOW before
something goes wrong. At that point (after backing up all data) you
can download a diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufactures web
site and run it on the drive to determine if the disk is repairable or
needs to be replace.

Troubleshoot System Restore "Restore Point Failures" in Windows XP.

Got the system up and running after doing a repair install, but doing all
sorts of dodgy stuff (like crashing if you launch Norton Internet Security)
and lot's of problems with MSI and Windows Update. Am copying files to
working disk at present then will test drive with seagate tools as you
suggest.

Cheers
