Registry changes - why don't they stay changed ?

Why doesn't a registry change stay changed ? Spybot tells me when reg items
get added/changed/deleted which is good but whenever I startup it seems to be
the *same* changes e.g. IE6 Start Page changing from about:blank to what it
should be and a Symantec upgrade keeps repeating too.
Also, things that I've removed from startup using msconfig, like real
player. It's like it returns to some predefined point but remembers the
changes and has to reapply them every time.
Can someone please explain how it all works ? Thanks, Gerry )

It happens because the software responsible for these things is still locked
and loaded..

Are you having all these problems you've posted different questions
about on the same computer?

Hi Mike,

ok, thanks - so it couldn't really change the reg entries while the progs
were "live" so to speak, yes ? Also, it doesn't tidy up at the next reboot
opportunity either ? So, ... how do i get those changes fixed ? Thanks,
Gerry )

Hi Steve,

Yes, but not all today. If I get a problem that's eg annoying but not
critical, i make a note of it and then enter several problems at the same
time - that's why there's a bunch of them suddenly on there today. Sorry if
that makes it more confusing.

Yeah, it's confusing. It seems like you've got a slew of different
problems on the same machine and some or all of them might be related. I
suggest you start over and post about all the problems you are having
with that machine in one message. Be as accurate and detailed as you can
be and keep things in sequential order. What heppened 1st, what happened
next, etc.

Um, there are several e.g. Symantec/Norton did an update a few days ago which
seemed to be just changing some switches from
"c:\Progra~1\Symnet~1\SNDMon.exe" to "c:\Progra~1\Symnet~1\SNDMon.exe /C"
(there may have been more but SpyBot cuts off too soon)
and I think some things I removed for efficiency, like WinZip Quick
Pick.lnk
and I changed the IE6 home page - it remembers what to change it to but I
was surprised that it seems to redo the change every reboot. I was hoping
once they'd gone/changed they'd stay gone/changed until/unless I needed to
put them back.
