In XP you create or restore a "system point." Start | Programs |
Accessories | System Tools | System Restore ...it's there

It is backed up each day as part (major item) in making the days System
Restore point. Using that is preferred because it ensures that any
changes to system components are kept in step. As an auxiliary backup
