Registering Windows XP Pro

How do I register my copy of Windows XP Pro? How can I determine whether it
has been registered with Microsoft?
 
You register by going to Start > Activate Windows. If you installed it then
only you can answer the second question.

Would it be possible to determine whether a PC with Windows Pro has been
registered with Microsoft? Since I did not install it.
