How can I change the name of a laptop prior to sale without reinstalling the
OS.
System: Compaq "Presario" WinXP Pro. Filesystem: Fat32.
Going into the registry scares me some, since I am only a novice in
computers.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Open the run command by clicking Start >> Run and type in:
regedit.exe click [OK] or Hit Enter on your Keyboard.
On the Registry Editor locate the Key Mentioned like this:
[-] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\RegisteredOwner = and change the Name to what you have in Mind then
after finish close the Registry and Reboot the machine.
Or Right click My Computer and select properties, then click on Computer
name Tab then click on Change and change the name there.
HTH.
Let us know.

Thank you, "Rock", the computer needing the change can't go online anymore
and when I downloaded the file to a CD from a different PC, the PC I want
to change does not recognize the file.

Why don't you want to reinstall the OS? To protect your personal
information and data from any future users of average skills, you
should, at the very least, format the hard drive. If you wish to do a
more thorough job of protecting your personal data, WipeDrive
(http://www.whitecanyon.com/wipedrive-erase-hard-drive.php) meets U.S.
DoD standards for securely cleaning surplus unclassified hard drives,
and could be used before formatting and reinstalling the OS and
applications.

To fix the "Registered to" information for WinNT/2K/XP, you can use
Start > Run > Regedit.exe to edit:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\RegisteredOwner

and:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\RegisteredOrganization

Hi Gerry

If you double-click on "Registered Owner", or right-click it and choose
Modify, a box will pop up in which you can change the name.

Hope this helps :)
