REGEDIT will not run

If I type regedit at the run command with XP the screen
just pops up then goes. Can anyone please help me as I
need to edit the registry.

Try to run the system file checker tool first, ( click

start, run, and type in this; " sfc /scannow " with that
space after the sfc, and it will ask for your XP CD to
copy any needed files from. Then just do a search
for "regedit.exe" and then just click on it there.

Sounds like a variation of the 32.Spybot.worm Virus. It prevents you from
opening system programs like regedit, msconfig, task manager, plus many
more. This virus has been making its way around the internet for the second
time so I have been told.

One variation of this virus is called the WINCFG.SCR.

Removing this virus will take a little bit of know-how. The first step will
be finding out the name of the infected file. If the two links above don't
supply you with enough information, do a Google search, and type in the name
of the virus.

Go to www.dougknox.com and in XP Utilities, the seventh item is 'Create
Emergency copies of critical utilities'. Use that. You have a virus
preventing the proper regedit from running. You will also need to do a
thorough antivirus check

Hi Ian,

Run the Tracker, load the emergency Regedit then remove the worms listed via
the log from the tracker. Some removals are listed in the third, but I
don't think it is any one of those. Won't hurt to run them, though.
