When I open the Regedit help file, I'm prompted to connect to the Internet.
I don't feel very comforatable with this. Is this supposed to happen?

.
Jon,

I don't think so. On the File menu, click "Disconnect
Network Registry". In the "Disconnect Network Registry"
dialog box, click the name of the computer from whose
registry you want to disconnect. BTW I got this
information from the help file.

"Disconnect" is grayed out. Is there another way to see what computers have
access to regedit?

I've just tried running regedit, while connected to the internet, and
pressing help and got regedit trying to connect to

activex.microsoft.com [207.46.196.108] using port 80

I suppose a simple solution is too avoid being connected to the internet
when pressing help in Regedit, or deny Regedit access. Don't ask me what
it's up to though lol

Actually, that should not be happening. Disconnect from the Internet and
run a full system scan with your current antivirus using updated
definitions. You may have a trojan.

No Trojan detected. Are you sure this isn't typical of all XP Installations?
For example the Help & Support Centre also tries to connect to the internet
(to www.microsoft.com) if you happen to be connected, as do other aspects of
Windows ( typing Start>Search and Windows tries to connect to
sa.windows.com )

In Help and Support - Options - Set search Options, uncheck the
'Microsoft Knowledge base' and I think you will find it not longer tries
to access out.

No. I still get "Microsoft Help Center Hosting Server" trying to connect to
www.microsoft.com [80.15.236.39] using remote port 80.
That particular one I can understand though, since I think it's to do with
updating the "Did you know?" section on the lower right of the opening
screen of the Help & Support Centre. But why on earth Windows Explorer needs
to connect to sa.windows.com every time you search for a local file when
online or why Regedit would want to connect, I do not know.

Looking around, this is happening on all of my Windows HTML Help
files. I get a ZoneAlarm alert asking me if I want that application to
access the Internet, and the dialup window. It doesn't seem to matter
whether I allow access, the application and help file run normally, as
near as I can tell. I've unchecked the Microsoft Knowledge Base option
in Help and Support, but this makes no difference. I'm wondering if I
have a virus; if not, this is very annoying, and I would like to find
out how to disable it.

If you are wondering if this is a virus, then scan with your current
antivirus using updated definitions. Which program do you use?

Jon,
Looking around, this is happening on all of my Windows HTML Help files. I
get a ZoneAlarm alert asking me if I want that application to access the
Internet, and the dialup window.

Perhaps there is a problem with the HTML Help viewer components on
your machine, and in particular the HTML Help ActiveX control
(\windows\system32\hhctrl.ocx). By applying Critical Update 811630 you
can upgrade these components and possibly fix the problem.

Here are some other things to try:

1) Delete or rename the file hh.dat, which you should find in the
following subdirectory:

\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\HTML
Help

The hh.dat file saves session information such as the window position
and favourite topics for all the .chm files on your machine. Windows
will automatically create a clean version of the file when you next
open any .chm.

2) Empty your Temporary Internet Files (TIF) directory. A full TIF
directory can cause HTML Help files to misbehave.

3) Use MJ's Help Diagnostics to check that the HTML Help runtime
components are properly installed and registered on your machine.
